ARCHERY SAFETY RULES
               By Darren Brown

Archery Butts.

NEVER point a bow and arrow at another person.

NEVER shoot an arrow straight up into the air you can hit another person or yourself.buckinghams_disk_135.jpg

NEVER shoot an arrow off into the distance if you cannot see where it will land, again there is the possibility of hitting another person.

All targets will be set up to insure that, no person can be accidentally hit by a stray arrow.

Allow at least 20 yards behind the target and a 30 degree ‘cone of safety’ on each side of the shooting lane.

If and when possible an archery backstop is to be used, and where possible set up against a hill or rising terrain.

When retrieving arrows from behind the target always leave you bow leaning against the face of the target so that it can be seen by other archers coming up to the target. If possible have one archer stand in front of the target to prevent anyone from shooting.

All arrows will be checked on a regular basis any found with defects will be discarded and or broken to avoid accidental use.

All bows will be checked on a regular basis for cracking or twisting if a bow is found to be defective it will be discarded, if in any doubt have it checked by a professional before any further use.

All bowstrings are to be checked on a regular basis any found to be defective must be replaced.

Do not draw the bowstring back further than the length of arrow for which it is intended, overdrawing can break the bow and injure the shooter in the process, there is an old saying that a fully drawn bow is already 7/8 broken.

Do not draw the bowstring back unless there is an arrow on it, and do not release the bowstring without an arrow on it , doing so is called dry firing and can result in bow damage.

The only safe place is behind the firing line. NEVER shoot an arrow unless you are positive that no person is in front of you or behind the target. NEVER stand in front of a bow whilst it is being shot even if you are to one side of the shooter.

At all times wait for the approval of the designated marshal before any commencement of shooting

Arrows will only be knocked on the shooting line and pointed at the targets.

After you have done shooting, wait for the marshal to call clear before walking to the targets to retrieve your arrows.

Do not run towards the targets always walk, remember arrows are sticking out and can cause injury.

Always stand to one side when pulling arrows out of the target and insure no one is directly behind you.

At all times follow the directions of the designated marshal.

Inexperienced persons will not be allowed to shoot without full supervision.

All persons wishing to shoot must pass a basic eye test.
