On 25th/26th March group members met up for our annual "Make and Mend" weekend, to prepare for the start of the new season. With the large amount of tents, furniture, weaponry and other equipment that gets brought to events, it's important to check everything is in a good, safe condition.
The group pavise decorated with the image of Saint Barbara peeking out from its protective cover.
All of the group pottery, wooden bowls and cauldrons were cleaned, checked for cracks and where necessary oiled.
The group bills and spears checked for damage and burrs.
Our bread oven has seen better days and needed some TLC.
A fresh coating of clay and straw is applied.
Good as new!
Cooking ingredients replenished, the historic utensils checked and cutlery awaiting sharpening.
All put away, ready for the new season!
Our first event of the season will be Easter Escapades at Beeston Castle, Cheshire on the 7th to 10th April. See the English Heritage website for further details: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/beeston-castle-easter-escapades-7-10-april/5
It is spring at last (allegedly!) and that means it's time for the Buckingham's Retinue annual Make and Mend weekend! An important part of the behind the scenes work that ensures our events can go ahead.
Just some of the kit to be checked and maintained
Group members converged on Mark’s house to go through all of the group kit and make sure everything is still in good condition after the wet season last year and to carry out general maintenance.
The garage shelves before
New shalfs for bills
Repairing bags
Clothing and accessories being repaired
The garage shelves after
Of particular note this year is the construction of a new set of shelves to keep the garage organised and a new protective sleeve for Gwynifer, our cannon.
Eagle eyed fans of the group will have noticed our Events 2024 page has been updated, however we will be making a separate announcement on this once a few final details have been ironed out.
Stop the (hand powered printing) presses! Two more events have been added to our 2023 calendar!
In addition to our other shows and events, we will now be attending the Chalke Valley History Festival and returning to Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings!
Buckinghams Retinue will be providing medieval living history with a focus on food, ettiquette and dance as part of the wider Chalke Valley History Festival on 1st and 2nd July, in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire.
We have also been invited back to Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings in Bromsgrove on the 27th and 28th August, where we will be proving our full range of medieval displays in our living history camp.
